Apparently Caleb Carr was invited by the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to write such a tale, and I felt like he did the task more than justice. In the afterword, Carr is also challenged to write a tale in which his own alienist, Kreizler, meets up with Holmes. It would be a wonderful combination of the scientific medical mind and the psychological.
